QACREA 2016 Scholarship Recipients
Each year QACREA sponsors a one thousand dollar scholarship at each high school for a graduating senior who is planning to pursue a career in education. This year’s recipients are Marie Higginbotham, Queen Anne’s County High School, and Caitlin Souder, Kent Island High School. Those who attended out June luncheon were fortunate to meet Marie and Caitlin.
Marie is enrolled at Grove City College, Grove City PA, where she plans to major in special education. Her passion for students with disabilities began as she encouraged and worked with her brother who has Down syndrome. During high school, Marie was also very involved in school sports, clubs and community service activities. She volunteered her time with Stop Hunger Now, Operation Christmas Child, and Special Olympics. She deeply believes in the reciprocal nature of learning, as expressed in the following quote, “A child with special needs will inspire you to be a special person.” (Unknown)
Caitlin plans to begin her college education at Chesapeake College, followed by Towson University where she also plans to enroll in the university’s special education program. She has volunteered and worked with students with special needs at Kent Island Elementary School’s open gym program. In preparation to become a teacher, Caitlin participated in the MD Teachers Academy program at Kent Island High School. The MD Teachers Academy affords high school students with the opportunity to take courses such as: Human Growth and Development, Teaching as a Profession, Foundations of Curriculum and Instruction, and an internship at an area school.
The Queen Anne’s Retired Educators Association would like to congratulate these young women. We wish them the best in their future studies and as they pursue a career in education.
