QACRSPA 2021 Scholarship Celebrations

We have much to celebrate and for which to be thankful! The annual Scholarship Drive, despite the postal delays, was a huge success!! Lynn Linder, QACRSPA Treasurer reports that we have received $3,729 so far in donations! That, my friends, is a record!! We are truly blessed by the generosity of our membership and sincerely thank everyone who contributed this year! (Perhaps it should be said that we accept donations all year long. If you wish to contribute at another time, just indicate this on the memo line of your check or include a note with your donations. Mail to Lynn Linder, Treasurer QACRSPA, 8084 Laurel Lane, Denton, MD)

And now the best part - your contributions are being put to good use! We had one application from KIHS and five (yes, five!) from QACHS! All applications were complete and all six revealed that these individuals were well qualified and highly motivated. A small team met on May 10th to review the five from QACHS. The decision was not an easy one. Following the procedures and using the approved rubric, the first place winner will receive the academic scholarship ($1000) and the second place winner will receive the book scholarship ($500). Because only one application was received from KIHS meeting all the criteria, this individual will receive both the academic and book scholarship. All winners will be invited to our July meeting

And the winners are . . .

1
Katia Insley from Kent Island High School will be attending Wingate University and majoring in elementary education. She completed the Teacher Academy Pathway. Among her many activities she has been active at her church Vacation Bible School, volunteers with the Special Olympic golf championship, and was a state qualifier on the KIHS swim team. Kristin Hurlock, Teacher Academy Pathway instructor said Katia “has demonstrated dedication, enthusiasm, and extreme promise within the profession!” Katia will receive both the academic and book scholarship for KIHS.
2

Taylor Walls from Queen Anne’s County High School will be attending Salisbury University where she will major in elementary education, hoping to teach 4th grade. She’s currently completing an internship at Kennard Elementary School. She’s a member of National Honor Society and team captain of the QACHS volleyball team. She is active in her church and volunteers for their food pantry. Casey Block, Social Studies teacher at QACHS, said about Taylor, “She is truly one of the most enjoyable students I’ve ever had . . . constantly demonstrated a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.” Taylor will receive the academic scholarship for QACHS.

Ashlynn Kunes from Queen Anne’s County High School will be attending the University of Valley Forge where she will major in elementary education. Her dream is to return to QAC and teach at Sudlersville Elementary School. She is currently completing an internship at Chestertown Christian Academy. During her high school career, she has participated in several different sports and she was on the Autism Pride Softball team. She will be playing softball at her university as well.  She was an active volunteer in her church in a variety of ways and sewed memory bears for Compass Regional Hospice. Her middle school reading specialist, Sarah Pierson, said, “Ashlynn is sure to be an incredible asset to the educational community and I look forward to the day when I can refer to her not only as a former student but a colleague.” Ashlynn will receive the book scholarship for QACHS.
